Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: We were just starting an interesting discussion on charging for replacement Library cards and where we purchase library cards.
Ellen Popit: So, what do you charge?
Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: We charge $5.00, unless their card is expired. And they have to pay off all their fines.
Kathy Goleman Divernon Township Library: Divernon charges $5 if lost before expiration date
Kay Burrous South Macon: We charge $5.00.
Pam - West Frankfort Public: Sandy - How do you keep track of how many replacements someone gets? We have some patrons that it seems like they get a new one each month.
Ellen Popit: Looks like a trend!
Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: Pam--we don't keep track, but with charging $5 they are less likely to be getting a new one all the time. We used to charge $2 and people would just get a new one everytime. That stopped when we raised the price.
Ellen Popit: What's your favority vendor for cards?
Kathy Goleman Divernon Township Library: We use Demco
Kim: We use Demco.

Kim: Not sure that Demco dosen't outsource to ID Label.
Ellen Popit: I have to tell you that I attended the Illinois Youth Service Institute last weekend in Bloomington and it was very worthwhile. Once you see it date for next year's event, you might consider attending or sending youth services staff.
Pam - West Frankfort Public: We require the patron to have their card when checking items out because the database of names is so big with so many duplicates. By scanning their card there is less chance of human error picking the wrong patron. How does everyone else do it?
Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: Pam--we do the same thing, they have to have their card to check out.
Sandy West - Rend Lake College: Rend Lake College currently chagres $5 for replacement, but that fee goes to $10 on 6/1
Kim: We cover tow towns, so we try our best to scan a card but have trouble saying someone has to go 14 miles and bring their card back. We do emphasize this is a "ONE TIME ONLY" exception.

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: We cover all of our county (except 1 township) and when we issue cards we tell them that they need to bring their card. In fact, it is written on the "agreement" on the back of the card that they sign when they get the card.
Ellen Popit: Esther, what's the township that you don't cover?
Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: Grand Prairie--they are in Centralia's district.
Sandy West - Rend Lake College: I totally agree with Pam. I even wanted to require our faculty to carry thier cards, since we migrated and became much larger, but lost that battle.
Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: Sandy--I had a staff member that didn't use her card and checked her stuff out to someone else. The names weren't even the same, she just picked the wrong one. :(
Sandy West - Rend Lake College: Been there, when a part-time employee used an upper northern library patrons account and then items when overdue and patron got irate with that library.
Sandy West - Rend Lake College: Of course, Rend Lake College is still trying to get accounts up to date to meet system criteria
Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: That's how we discovered it--the wrong patron got the overdue notice and called. Said they didn't live here anymore. When I looked them up, their name was right above my staff person. And this was before we moved to Polaris.
Ellen Popit: I'm just curious. Do many, most, only a few of your patrons do much of there business by just placing holds remotely and then coming in to pick the materials up?
Ellen Popit: "their" not "there" business!
Kim: In Horizon, we could set it to show only our patrons. I don't suppose Polaris lets us do that.
Kim: No. Ours like to browse the shelves.
Sandy West - Rend Lake College: You can do an entire search of your patron's by using the limitaor assigned branch

Sandy West - Rend Lake College: We get students who wait to the last minute to seek out their material, so not a lot of placing holds here
Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: I think that we have a large number of patrons who do everthing online and then just come in for their items. I would guess about 1/4 to 1/3.
Ellen Popit: I was talking to a library trustee last night and their library is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. Story Corps from SIU is coming to interview people to talk about how things have changed over the last hundred years (a farmer, a businessman, etc). At any rate, the library staff will talk to Story Corps about how library service has changed over the last 100 years. It's pretty amazing when you think about it.
Chris Dawdy: As I'm just joining this conversation, I'd like to take a moment to apologize! I'm typically the staff member that sends out the reminder for the IHLS Directors' Chat, and I totally forgot this morning!
Ellen Popit: Certification is done for our more than 500 libraries and ISL is happy that they'll have the data from the ILL Traffic Survey.
Chris Dawdy: And thinking about other "housekeeping" duties, have you all cast your vote in the IHLS board election?

Sandy West - Rend Lake College: Vote cast and certification completed. Very excited to the next semi-annual meeting of SHARE
Chris Dawdy: And that will be on May 4 at the Effingham Public Library, and will also on v-tel.
Ellen Popit: The other housekeeping task will be the reporting of non-resident fees and participation. Stay tuned for news on that!

Sandy West - Rend Lake College: If you have a juvinle book for beginner readers but the coapy right is 1962 with black and white "live" animal picutres would you continue to circulate the tiem?

Chris Dawdy: I think you're right! Try this one!
Chris Dawdy: Sandy, I don't think I would, but the rule of thumb we used to use was that if the book hadn't been checked out in five or six years, it was gone!
Sandy West - Rend Lake College: It had just a few recent uses, but I'm very hesitant to keep the item because of the age/dress of the children in the book. I just have some staff that feel if the item was used it should remain on the shelf.
Pam - West Frankfort Public: Sandy - At our library children don't like books that look out of date so they wouldn't be checking it out and we would get rid of it. We would also get rid of it if it were in really bad shape.
Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: Same here--we just went through art books and got rid of the ones with b/w pics. They just take up space.
Ellen Popit: And what is going to be more useful: old black and white pictures or an online "real" view in color?
