Brant Wingerter: (6/8/2016 12:57) Good afternoon everyone, we will begin shortly.

Brant Wingerter: (13:03) Well, hello everyone. I sent out a "reminder" email just now. Hopefully we can get some more people in soon. Today's topic is IT and Technology!! You may open fire. :)

Brandon Chapman: (13:03) Hi everyone!

Brandon Chapman: (13:04) Ok, I'll start. :)

Brandon Chapman: (13:05) Microsoft's free Windows 10 upgrades will be ending on July 30th. If for no other reason than to claim a free Windows 10 license, it's best to take advantage of that soon!

Kathy Goleman - Divernon Township Library: (13:06) We have upgraded all our computers to Windows 10 and so far so good! :-)

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:07) I found that once I was able to go in and turn off all "tracking" stuff, that Windows 10 has not been too bad. I just hope more people can figure out what to disable.

Brandon Chapman: (13:08) The best thing about the free upgrade is that if you ever have to reinstall Windows 10 (completely from scratch), you can, and Microsoft will recognize your computer's configuration so you won't have to enter a product key to re-activate it.

Kim: (13:08) We upgraded 8 computers and 2 of them kept shutting down - sometimes 2 or 3 times in an hour. Of course, one of those was my office computer and I had to have it replaced yesterday.

Brandon Chapman: (13:09) There are various opinions on both sides regarding Windows 10 and its data collection. For those that want more control over this, there's a tool called Spybot Anti-Beacon: https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:10) That's good to know--I just did a lot of Googling.

Kim: (13:10) On the upside-I have anew computer in the office

Brandon Chapman: (13:11) Kim: That is weird. They shut themselves down during the upgrade? Were they running on battery?

Kim: (13:11) No, they truned themselves off about 2 or 3 minutes after the upgrade.

Brant Wingerter: (13:11) @Kimg, that is the more fun way of looking at it. :)

Brant Wingerter: (13:11) Heh, @Kim*

Brandon Chapman: (13:12) Ah. I'm wondering if it was giving you what I like to call a Hidden Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)?

Brandon Chapman: (13:13) Sometimes Windows likes to hide some of the scarier things from people, like blue screens. (Of course Windows 10's blue screen has a sad face emoticon ( :( ) now...)

Brandon Chapman: (13:13) The Hidden Blue Screen will show up for maybe a split second (if even that) before the computer just decides to restart itself.

Brandon Chapman: (13:14) ...but that wouldn't explain it shutting down (as in powering completely off).

Brandon Chapman: (13:15) I've seen this happen with some Windows 10 upgrades: once the Desktop comes up, it tries to load an old driver (usually Intel Rapid Storage Technology, but sometimes it can be video or other drivers) before clonking out.

Kim: (13:16) The IT guy here couldn't figure it out, but did say he found something online that said it occasionally happens when you update to Windows 10.

Brant Wingerter: (13:16) @Brandon, and let's not talk about sound drivers. ^^

Brandon Chapman: (13:17) Oh yeah...that. :)

Brant Wingerter: (13:18) With the lack of questions today, maybe some quick feedback? Any random Polaris oddities to mention? Things that you're dealing with that we may not even know are an issue?

Brant Wingerter: (13:19) Well, it's good that adobe didn't just say multiple people are typing right way. :)

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:20) It's been working well (knocking on wood!).

Brant Wingerter: (13:20) @Esther: I blame Brandon!

Brandon Chapman: (13:21) lol

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:21) LOL! We like that it's working well! Now if we could just get SAM to be as cooperative... :(

Brant Wingerter: (13:23) @Esther: That sounds like an issue. :) We've been restarting the SIP services regularly. Is that part of your issue?

Brant Wingerter: (13:25) I think that was a "fix" for something related to SAM. Troy is the one mumbling about SAM around here though.

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:25) A couple of weekends ago, we couldn't connect with SAM at all. But the majority of problems are SAM not recoginizing patron barcodes--even the ones it just created. Workstations in use don't show up on the staff view, so we can't add time if the patron needs it. etc.

Brant Wingerter: (13:26) Ah, most of that may be out of our control. Is Troy working with you on that already?

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:27) Yes, He and Lazerware are working on it--it just seems to be getting worse since the "fix"

Brant Wingerter: (13:27) Unless it's Polaris/SIP not returning the information correctly.

Brant Wingerter: (13:27) Ok, I'll follow up with him and let him know that and see what we can do to help.

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:28) I know that Tony (from Lazerware) was going to get with Troy when Troy's back.

Brant Wingerter: (13:30) @Brandon, we need to break something on the Tuesday before our SHARE Chat from now on.

Brandon Chapman: (13:31) Heh...most of the broken stuff this week was on Monday.

Brant Wingerter: (13:31) Hmmm, better planning next time then maybe?

Brandon Chapman: (13:31) ...or just not fix it as quickly...lol

Brant Wingerter: (13:32) lol, maybe not that.

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:32) Of course you know that the IT chat is the one everyone can't wait to join. ;)

Brant Wingerter: (13:32) @Esther, we are two interesting gents. :)

Brandon Chapman: (13:33) ...as long as I have bacon and caffeine

Brant Wingerter: (13:34) Anything else in the world of technology?

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:34) You are--and you can carry the entire conversation for us. lol!

Brant Wingerter: (13:35) Maybe one day we'll use SHARE Chat as an open forum where you can watch how much we talk when we're fixing something. :)

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:35) haha!

Brant Wingerter: (13:35) Although, I don't know how well this supports screenshots. Brandon may not like it if it can't do inline screenshots.

Kim: (13:35) We have had two people come in in the last week and say they could not do ebooks on their devices is their still a password issue?

Brant Wingerter: (13:37) @Kim: Not that I'm aware of, but I will see if I can ping Lesley Z really quick.

Brandon Chapman: (13:39) Also...we haven't made an official annoucement yet, but there will be an upgrade to our systems running Polaris this summer.

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:39) Will there be downtime?

Brant Wingerter: (13:40) @Esther: Yes.

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:40) How long....?

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:41) Or will we still be able to use LEAP while Polaris is being updated?

Brandon Chapman: (13:41) LEAP will be part of the upgrade as well, so no.

Brant Wingerter: (13:41) @Esther: Heh, we do not have anything nailed down for time but all Polaris services will be down durning the upgrade.

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:42) Okay--it's good to have a heads up!

Brandon Chapman: (13:43) The upgrade should fix some of the weird nuances that happen every now and then (Printers, I'm looking at you!)

Brandon Chapman: (13:44) (backwards printing, no printing, printing when it feels like it)

Brandon Chapman: (13:45) Also...you'll be able to use other browsers aside from Internet Explorer to connect to Polaris.

Brandon Chapman: (13:46) (although Internet Explorer will still be the best option...it'll no longer be the -only- option)

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:46) That will be great!

Brandon Chapman: (13:48) Mac support will be better as well (although we're still trying to work out one particular issue, which is...what else could it be?...printing)

Brant Wingerter: (13:49) Anyone else super nerdy pumped about Apple's WWDC coming up?! How are we not talking about that??

Brant Wingerter: (13:49) Ten minutes remaining. Anyone have some last minute zingers?

Brandon Chapman: (13:51) RIP OS X

Brandon Chapman: (13:51) It will be MacOS now.

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:52) Too many of us are not Apple people, so not sure how it will effect the rest of us.

Brandon Chapman: (13:52) Apple probably did that to minimize confusion between the upcoming iOS 10 and OS X.

Nick Bennyhoff-IHLS: (13:52) reading about the Apple WWDC now - Siri being integrated with third-party apps will potentially make it a lot more useful

Brandon Chapman: (13:52) True.

Brandon Chapman: (13:53) ...but there are a lot of iPhones and iPads out there.

Brant Wingerter: (13:53) @Brandon: I think you mean macOS

Brant Wingerter: (13:54) I just want a calculator on my iPad...I mean...really...how is that still not there...

Brant Wingerter: (13:55) Having to use spotlight/search/whatever they're calling those two terrible panes now is just annjoying.

Brandon Chapman: (13:56) @Esther: I can see how Macs wouldn't generate much excitement, but those iPhones, iPads, and whatnot are everywhere, lol

Esther Curry--C.E. Brehm Memorial PLD: (13:57) True

Brant Wingerter: (13:59) Well, thanks for coming everyone! I hope to see you all next month. Have a great week.

Kathy Goleman - Divernon Township Library: (14:00) Thanks

Kay Burrous South Macon 2: (14:00) Thanks.
