The SHARE Bibliographic and Cataloging Standards Committee has decided to advance a proposed AI/Computer Generated Material policy for member comment. Please view the policy below and respond to this post with any questions or comments you have. Please respond by Feb. 13, 2026, for your comments to be considered by the Committee.

Policy

Items that are or appear to be AI-generated or have AI-generated components (text or images) must have the appropriate identifying fields included in the bibliographic record, including genre term, 500 note, and AI generator, if known.

Please see the SHARE AI/Computer-Generated Material procedure for guidance.

In progress: SHARE AI/Computer-Generated Material Procedure

When specific AI Generators are named:

The current PCC guidance says to list the specific AI used for creation of the work as a “related work.”

From the PCC FAQ on cataloging resources generated using AI:

The element name “related work” (RDA 25.1) may be used as a relationship designator in a 730 field of the title of the related program.

See the PCC FAQ guide for examples on how to format the 730 in various situations.

This can be used for works fully or partially created by AI, and for works that were translated with the help of AI or other computer software.

When the use of AI is not marked or no specific AI generator is named:

Determining which works are AI

It can be difficult to determine when a work is generated by AI vs. when a work uses digital images or poorly worded text but isn’t necessarily created by AI.

Some clues that a work is created by AI:

  • The “author” has no authority record or author website.
  • The images are inconsistent throughout the book.
    • For example, the appearance of the main character changes slightly across the book, unrelated to the story.
  • There are strange gaps in the story or it’s not completely coherent.
  • The images in the book are skewed or strange, particularly the faces or hands of people, or the text within an image.
  • The work appears to be self-published and there’s no way to get in contact with anyone involved in its creation.

If you have a reasonable suspicion that a work is created with AI, add the following notes and genre terms.

Author and Title (1XX/245)

If there is a named author, but you have reason to believe that author does not exist as a human, add whatever is on the title page in the 245/100 fields, and add a 500 note.

Example:

Title page: I Want to be a Firefighter, written by Peter J.

Illustrations and About the Author blurb (see photos below)

  • Notice that the eyes of the firefighters appear strange, and the insignia on their helmets is unintelligible. The pictures are for the same story but depict the main characters differently (age, drawing style, color palette).

Example of an AI generated author bio, with an AI photo.

About the author photo and blurb (above)

In the record:

100 0_ $aPeter J, $e author.
245 10 $a I want to be a firefighter /$c written by Peter J.
500 _ _ $a This book appears to have been written and illustrated using AI.
655 _7 $a Computer-generated literature. $2 lcgft
655 _7 $a AI art. $2 aat

Illustrations from the book’s interior (below)

<p>AI-generated content may be incorrect.

Notes (5XX)

Add a 500 note mentioning the specific AI generator used, or a note saying the work is generated by AI.

Examples:

                500 _ _ $a Text and images appear to be AI-generated.

500 _ _ $a Novella was partially written using ChatGPT.

Genre Terms (655)

Add this LCGFT term to all works that were created partially or fully by AI:

655 _7 $a Computer-generated literature. $2 lcgft

Add other terms as applicable:

For poetry created by a computer or AI, add:

                655 _7 $a Computer poetry. $2 lcgft

Add these terms from the Art and Architecture Thesaurus as applicable:

For works illustrated with AI-generated images, add:

655 _7 $a AI art. $2 aat

For works generated fully by AI, add:

655 _7 $a AI-generated content. $2 aat

For works generated partially by AI, add:

655 _7 $a AI-assisted content. $2 aat
