Attaching to set vs individual records for multipart audiovisual material

Home > Policies and Procedures > Attaching to set vs individual records for multipart audiovisual material

For multipart audiovisual material (i.e., DVDs and audiobooks), attach your holding to the appropriate set or individual record based on how your library intends to circulate the item.

If you will be circulating the item as one piece, attach to the record for the set. If you will be circulating items separately or in groups, attach to the record for the individual disc or group.

This also applies in instances where separate cases with groups of discs are currently being circulated using only one barcode and the cases are not attached to each other. Each case must be on a separate record and each must have its own barcode.

Keep in mind that circulating items separately or in groups may require creation of a new record.

The entire season of a television series that consists of several DVDs in one container: If you will be circulating the container as one piece, attach to the record for the set. If you will be circulating the DVDs separately in individual cases, attach to the records for the individual DVDs.

Multipart audiobooks: If you will be circulating the container as one piece, attach to the record for the set. If you will be circulating the discs separately in individual cases, or in groups (i.e., Discs 1-5 in a separate container from discs 6-10), attach to the records for the individual discs or groups.
