General Material Designations (GMD)

Home > Policies and Procedures > General Material Designations (GMD)

Adding GMDs is a local edit. Do not add GMDs to OCLC records.

A general material designation (gmd) should be added to all records for braille, large print material, larger print material, and all non-print formats.

For video games and computer games, use [electronic resource].

For all sound recordings except preloaded audio players, use [sound recording]. This includes Vox books and other audio-enabled books, as well as records for audiobooks with an accompanying book.

For preloaded audio players such as Playaways or GoReaders, use [electronic resource].
