An update on SHARE committee work

Executive Council--After much badgering, the voting survey for the SHARE Executive Council has been closed, with 177 votes cast.  The unofficial results are as follows:

  • Small Public Library representative—Susan McKinney, St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library
  • School Library representatives—Sonya Johnson, Decatur Public Schools; Annette Mills, Triad High School; Shelly Varvil, Carbondale Middle School
  • Academic representative—Scott Drone-Silvers, Lake Land College

These results will be official when the SHARE Executive Council approves them at their next meeting, on July 6, but after all that nagging I did, I thought you all might like to know that we finally met the quorum requirement!

Bibliographic & Cataloging Standards Committee—This committee is currently working on revising and updating standards to meet the cataloging standards for RDA (Resource Description and Access), which will be in effect July 1.  The next committee meeting is scheduled for July 21.

Circulation & Resource Sharing Committee—This committee is currently considering training requirements for member library circulation staff and implementation of common loan rules, in an effort to reduce the number of circulation problems that have been occurring.  The next meeting is August 10.

eResource Committee—With the decision made to establish User Groups for the SHARE eResource consortia--the CloudLibrary and Zinio, to start—this committee has concluded that they will be meeting twice a year, unless a special meeting is called for a specific purpose.  The eResource User Groups will take responsibility for determining fees and other rules for each individual consortia.  The next meeting of the eResource Committee is scheduled for September 25.

Finance/Policy Committee—At present, this committee’s primary concern is monitoring the SHARE budget and expenditures, as it impacts services that can be provided and member fees.  The next meeting is July 13.

Wal-Mart grant

As you may remember, IHLS received a $75,000 Wal-Mart State Grant for the purpose of assisting small--in terms of both population and income--public libraries meet the four benchmarks established by the Illinois State Library a couple of years ago.  Ellen Popit and Chris Dawdy have been communicating with each of the targeted libraries, and, to date, five libraries have made the decision to join SHARE to meet the four benchmarks.  Tilden Public Library, Ramsey Public Library, Jonesboro Public Library, Zeigler Public Library, and Mounds Public Library are working on learning how to implement Polaris, in preparation for going live, with assistance from the Wal-Mart grant, which is paying for all of their implementation fees and for barcoding assistance.

The Wal-Mart grant is also assisting several small public libraries obtain wifi access for their patrons, or improve their wifi access.

Many thanks to Wal-Mart!

Have you ever had a patron say he/she can’t figure out what he/she wants to read next?  Or that they like a particular author and would like to read more books like that?  If so, you might want to check out these websites that a couple of library directors shared at a recent meeting:
